The 33rd annual Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Volleyball League Final saw familiar faces and a new challenger leave it all out on the court. After an undefeated regular season, Team P.E. Revival, captained by CSHL’s Hannah Meyer and Caryn Koza, sought their third Tiernan Cup in four years. Across from this goliath stood third-seed underdog PolymerAces, led by CSHL graduate students Jed de Ruiter-Swain, Diego Hernandez, and Masayuki Nagai.
Volleyball is woven into the fabric of CSHL’s tight-knit community. The League has run almost uninterrupted since the early 1990s and is open not only to faculty and students but also to staff members like Wayne Hamilton, a 21-year veteran of CSHL’s Logistics department. Each team has captains or coaches to guide them. But on the court, as in research labs and offices across campus, every player has a chance to make a lasting impact.
“We come from all over the lab,” P.E. Revival’s Leah Boyd says. “We’re all friends and it’s so much fun to come together after work every day and play. Some of us just started. Some of us have been playing for a while. But no matter where we are, this game brings us all together.”
After a close, hard-fought match, P.E. Revival stood alone, capping their perfect season with a second straight Tiernan Cup. Press play to watch all the action unfold.
